50 Years of Belgian Waffles
Homemade Belgian waffles have been around for over 50 years and, believe it or not, this particular type of waffles doesn’t come from the Belgium. The Belgian waffle was originally introduced in the U.S. at an exposition in Seattle, Washington.
Though it didn’t catch on at the time, the waffle was later featured at the New York World Fair in 1964. Maurice Vermersch originally called the sweet bread “Bel-Gem waffles” after he altered a recipe for Brussels waffles. They are not a common type of breakfast food that is served within the U.S. but people are aware of them because they are usually served as a unique breakfast treat or on special occasions.
There are a variety of different recipes to prepare Belgian waffles. The most common way is to dust confectioners sugar atop of the golden brown pastries. Even though this is the most typical way that Belgian waffles are served, people have developed a variety of ways to consume these golden fried cakes.
Ice cream and syrup is sometimes placed on top of Belgian waffles. Chefs and cooks now serve Belgian waffles with a variety of different types of ice creams such as vanilla or chocolate in their recipes. They also serve waffles with a variety of toppings.
Strawberry ice cream with strawberry syrup is sometimes used as toppings. Caramel, vanilla and butterscotch syrups are served as well. There’s nothing that kids love more for any meal of the than Belgian waffles smothered in fruit or syrup.
Many people like to eat jelly or jam on their pancakes and waffles. When it comes to Belgian variety they like to do the same. Grape and strawberry jellies and jams are consumed. Many Waffle
lovers also prefer the different varieties of preserves. Cherry, orange, peach and pineapple preserves offer consumers a unique flavor for their Belgian treats. There are many different flavors of preserves that people can experiment with until they find one that best suits their taste.
Believe it or not some people even step it up a notch when it comes to serving their Belgian waffles. They eat them with vegetables such as squash, candied sweet potatoes or pumpkin.
These particular types of vegetables usually have a sweeter taste than the other types. Good cooks already know that they can easily be used for that purpose. Candied vegetables can make an excellent choice to cover Belgian waffles.
When it comes to consuming Belgian waffles spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg can be mixed in with brown sugar, cocoa powder, shaved coconut or raisins. Cheese might seem like an unusual thing to place on top of Belgian waffles but some people do place these items on their waffle.
American, cheddar and Colby are usually used for this purpose but people have been known to experiment with more extreme varieties such as nacho and mozzarella. Meats such as ham and beef have been eaten with Belgian waffles and some people even prepare them as a part of their dinner time meal.
